Your life changed.Did you?

The hardest part of change is rarely what you lost. It is figuring out who you are now.

What changed for you?

You do not need to know exactly what you need. Choose the question that feels closest to where you are and we will show you where to begin.

Why you can trust this

Evidence first. Interpretation second. Recommendations third.

AURIS exists to study identity adaptation properly and to say plainly what the evidence does and does not yet show.

108
interviews in the research sample

Original qualitative research with people living through identity defining change, gathered in their own words.

33
interviews currently coded

Coded and analysed so far out of the 108 interview sample. The figure moves as the work continues, and we publish it as it stands.

Five
disciplines drawn together

Identity psychology, behavioural science, implementation science, published literature and lived experience.

Applied
in real settings

Developed and tested with charities, community organisations and delivery partners, not only on paper.

Where evidence is strong we say so. Where it is still emerging we say that too. AURIS does not present emerging research as established fact. The pattern from identity to community, purpose and stability appears in the 33 interviews coded so far, out of a sample of 108. It is an emerging pattern, not a proven result, and we present it as one.

You don't have to be in crisis to start.

  • You shouldn't have to break to ask for help.
  • You don't have to hit rock bottom.
  • Everyone waits for the crisis.
  • AURIS starts before it.

Who this is for

Identity does not only change when a uniform comes off.

Most people arrive here for themselves. Some arrive for someone else. Both are welcome.

If you are weighing up a career change at 40 or 50, the shift is rarely only about work. If the role itself is what has moved, read about professional identity. Practitioners who hold these conversations can look at identity and transition coaching, and employers running restructures can read how outplacement and career transition support can go further than the next job.

In the words of the research

If that sounds familiar, you are not unusual.

These are the experiences described again and again across our interviews, written here as recognisable patterns rather than attributed accounts. Every participant remains anonymous.

  • You are busy, you are coping, and you still cannot say who you are now.

  • You miss the certainty far more than you miss the job itself.

  • You are surrounded by people, and none of them speak the same language.

  • You made the decision yourself, and you still feel the loss of it.

  • You keep waiting to feel like yourself again, and it keeps not happening.

What you are describing is not weakness and it is not a diagnosis. It is identity adaptation: the slower work that begins once the practical arrangements are done.

Why AURIS exists

Invest in yourself. Help us give it away.

AURIS was built around a simple belief: identity drives behaviour.

When life changes, the way we see ourselves can change with it. That can affect confidence, behaviour, relationships, performance and direction.

AURIS exists to help people understand those changes and rebuild from the inside out through research, learning and community.

AURIS uses organisational and learning value to help fund community access. The mission is not to monetise vulnerability. It is to create something valuable enough that investment in yourself can help make access possible for people who need it.

Understanding your identity is the first step to rebuilding your life.

Whether you are leaving a service, changing career, becoming a parent, retiring or facing illness, the question underneath is the same. Everything we build returns to that one idea.

More about AURIS and the people behind it
What rebuilding looks like

This does not stay where it is now.

We do not promise outcomes, and nothing here happens quickly. What we can tell you is what people commonly describe regaining as they do this work.

  • Everything feels blurred and hard to name.

Clarity. You can describe what is actually happening to you.

  • You second guess decisions that used to be automatic.

Confidence. You trust your own judgement again.

  • You are busy without knowing what any of it is for.

Direction. What you are working towards becomes yours, not inherited.

  • Small things land far harder than they should.

Emotional stability. Hard days still come, and they knock you over less.

  • You describe yourself by what you used to be.

A stronger sense of identity. You can say who you are now.

What is AURIS?

Transition is the start, not the whole story.

Support has usually been measured by practical things: a job, a course, a home. Those matter. They are also the first step, not the finish line.

AURIS explores another question:

What happens to our sense of identity when a role that has shaped who we are comes to an end?

We call the answer to that question identity adaptation: the slower work of rebuilding who you are, where you belong and what you are for. Our research follows people through it, in their own words.

Our work brings together psychology, behavioural science, implementation science and original qualitative research to inform better conversations, better support and better outcomes.

We don't claim to have all the answers. We believe the answers come through careful research, collaboration and a commitment to following the evidence wherever it leads.

In plain English
Transition
The moment you leave a role, a uniform or a way of life.
Identity adaptation
Everything that comes after: working out who you are now, where you fit and what you want next. It usually takes far longer than the paperwork.
Identity Performance Psychology
The study of how your sense of who you are affects how you think, feel, work and cope.

What we do

Research

Advancing understanding of identity and service provider identity adaptation.

Develop

Creating evidence-informed frameworks and practical tools.

Support

Helping individuals and organisations navigate meaningful change.

Collaborate

Working with charities, public services, researchers and partners to strengthen the evidence base.

Share

Publishing research, articles and resources to encourage informed discussion.

Built on evidence

Why you can trust what you read here.

We do not begin with conclusions. We begin with the evidence, and we are clear about how much of it there is.

Evidence first. Interpretation second. Recommendations third.

Published research

We review peer reviewed literature, government publications and established evidence across identity, psychology and behavioural science.

Original research

Identity After the Uniform explores lived experience across identity defining roles. Emerging themes are shared as they develop, not as conclusions.

Honest about certainty

Where evidence is strong, we say so. Where it is still emerging, we say that too. Our own frameworks are named as developing work.

Applied with partners

We work alongside charities, community organisations and public services to test how evidence informed ideas hold up in real settings.

Common questions

The questions people ask first.

You don't have to have everything figured out.

You just need somewhere to start.
